Ohio Department of Education Requirements MyEdPortal Solutions
Each educator wishing to fulfill the license renewal requirements is responsible for the design of an individual professional development plan, subject to approval of the local professional development committee. The plan shall be based on the needs of the educator, the students, the school, and the school district. MyEdPortal allows educators to create and manage their Individual Professional Development Plans (IPDP) online. The plan must be submitted to the LPDC for approval before any action can be taken on the plan. MyEdPortal allows educators to create their plan by selecting content areas such as student needs, building, district, and personal goals.
At the heart of an IPDP are two or three statements of the broad learning goals the educator plans to meet during the renewal cycle. A goal statement should:
  • Describe an area related to practice that will be the focus of the educator’s learning.
  • State an intention to engage in learning using an action verb signifying the educator’s personal learning.
  • Describe how learning will be demonstrated such as products, or dissemination of findings.
  • Goals entered as a part of MyEdPortal require the educator to select an area related to practice, and allows the educator to add a written description of their goal in that area.
Any submitted plan deemed unreadable by the LPDC shall be returned to the submitter without review. The proposal should be resubmitted in appropriate and readable form at the next regularly scheduled LPDC meeting. Since MyEdPortal is an online application, all information submitted by the educator must be typed and will be displayed to the LPDC in a standard format. Plans that are not understood or the meaning is unclear may be returned to the educator by the LPDC for clarification.
Certificate Type and Teaching Field Codes Certificate types and teaching fields are added and maintained from the 'Local Professional Development Committee Renewal Verification Form' from the Ohio Department of Education (ODE).
Coursework, classes/workshops, and/or Equivalent Other Activities (EOA) must be completed in accordance with the IPDP and must be pre-approved. Courses taken prior to approval of the IPDP will not be accepted. MyEdPortal allows the educator to add activities only after their IPDP has been approved by the LPDC. Activities must be tied to a goal on the approved IPDP and the activity must go though its own approval process.
Coursework or continuing education units or other equivalent activities may be combined. MyEdPortal allows the educator to add different types of activities toward their licensure renewal. The CEUs of the activities during their Licensure cycle are totaled to allow the LPDC to easily verify the completed number of CEUs.
CEU Continuing Education Credit is ten (10) professional development contact hours approved by a Local Professional Development Committee. Contact Hour to CEU conversion on MyEdPortal is .1 CEU for every 1 Contact Hour. This conversion is done automatically by the application.
Each school district shall establish a local appeal process for educators who wish to appeal the decision of the local professional development committee. Educators are given the opportunity to appeal the LPDC's decision after 3 returned attempts of submitting an activity for pre-approval.
The ODE LPDC shall accept outside agency-approved IPDPs for any staff member hired by ODE from a local school district or agency as fulfilling all necessary requirements of the ODE renewal process. Work already completed and approved in the previous position shall be honored. Remaining work shall be acquired using the guidelines of the ODE LPDC with resubmission of an IPDP to be completed within the 180-day probation period. Educator's information can easily be moved to another district within the MyEdPortal family. For districts that are not apart of MyEdPortal, the educator's information can easily be entered into the application.
Keep records of all licensure and LPDC transactions, particularly the LPDC review approval of an IPDP, coursework and other professional development activities. Details of LPDC transactions, educator's licensure(s), activities, coursework, etc are all maintained in the MyEdPortal database, so information can be retrieved at any time.
